Program Mission:  The Master’s degree program is designed for students seeking expertise in media fields beyond the undergraduate level.  Students typically tailor-make programs in various specialties (e.g., social media, media management, media for social change, public media).   

Program Learning Objectives:

  • Successful completion of diverse and specialized courses
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret theory and practice of media

Program Overview:  Masters students can select from a broad range of specializations in international media, media industries and management, media studies, public media, or communication and development.

The public media program is jointly administered by the School of Media Arts and Studies and the WOUB Public Media, and has trained over one hundred thirty public media professionals to return to a career with improved and specialized skills.

The Communication and Development Studies program is jointly administered by the Center for International Studies and the School of Media Arts and Studies. With a focus on communication strategies and implementation for positive social change, the program is unique in its approach to the study of international development. CIS administers the application process.

Opportunities for Graduates:  The program is geared towards preparing students for careers in various areas of the media industries, including as audience researchers, producers and program executives, sales and marketing professionals; for work in the media policy sector; or for doctoral studies.

Graduation Requirements:

  1. Minimum semester hours required: 36 (Foundation courses: MDIA 6000, MDIA 6010)
  2. Comprehensive exam or Thesis
  3. Expected time to degree if studying fulltime: 12 months (fall, spring, and summer semesters)

Culminating Experience: 6-Hour Comprehensive Exam or Thesis

Admission Requirements:

  • University requirements.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Personal statement of purpose
