Program Overview:  The CSP program is a full time, cohort-based program. The curriculum integrates theory and practice, blending courses in student development theory, student affairs administration, counseling, and higher education with hands-on experience in student affairs offices at Ohio University as well as neighboring institutions.

Most positions in the CSP program include a graduate assistantship (GA) in Student Affairs or another academic or administrative office at Ohio University. Admission to the CSP program and GA assignments are made independently. Admission decisions are made by the HESA faculty, while all decisions concerning GA positions are made by university administrators following our Interview Weekend. Interview Weekend takes place in Athens, Ohio each February.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Students will comprehend realistically the different aspects of the student affairs profession.

  1. Students will analyze fundamental student affairs competency areas, including the structure and function of higher education, student development theories, diversity, and organization/administration, and assessment/evaluation.
  2. Students will apply leadership skills, interpersonal/helping skills, and scholarship skills to be student affairs professionals.
  3. Students will integrate their developing professional networks, their mentorship experiences, their assistantship/practicum experiences, and their academic experiences into their own unique career development.

Graduation Requirements:  The following requirements must be satisfied to graduate.

Students much complete 49 credit hours of coursework as follows:

  • Core Courses: EDHE 5880, EDCP 5210, EDCP 5220, EDCP 6300, EDCP 6400, EDCP 6500, EDCP 6600, EDHE 7210, EDHE 7860, EDRE 5010, EDHE 6940, EDCP 6920, EDHE 7780
  • Elective Courses: EDCP 7430, EDHE 6890, EDHE 7880, EDHE 7850, EDHE 7790
  • Capstone Course EDHE 6940

Culminating Experience:  The capstone experience (Seminar Paper) requires the completion of a literature review on a topic of interest to the student and relevant to the issues, problems, and trends of her/his major area of study. 

Admission Requirements:
A portfolio that includes a goal statement, transcripts of all previous post-secondary coursework, and three letters of recommendation. If undergraduate GPA is < 2.9 (4.0 scale) overall or < 3.25 for the last 90 quarter or equivalent semester hours, applicants must submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); if GPA exceeds these levels, no test scores are required.  Priority consideration is given to applications completed by February 1.

International Students:  This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.
