Program Overview:  The Middle Childhood Education (MCE) program includes six majors with academic specializations in any two of the following content specializations: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The MCE program is nationally recognized by the Association for Middle Level Education.

A key feature of the MCE program is its yearlong clinical culminating in a professional internship and a master’s research project. The MCE master’s program can be completed in 3 academic terms if students (a) begin their program of study during the summer academic term, (b) follow a prescribed sequence of courses, and (c) submit official documentation demonstrating they have successfully passed the required content exam of the Assessment for Ohio Educators. Students who enter the program in fall or spring semester or who must meet additional content knowledge requirements may require more than 4 semesters to successfully complete the master’s program.

Program Learning Outcomes: The MCE program is designed to prepare beginning teachers who:

• Understand, use, and reflect on the major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to young adolescent development and use that knowledge in their practice.
• Understand and use the central concepts, standards, research, and structures of content to plan and implement curriculum that develops all young adolescents’ competence in subject matter.
• Develop equitable and inclusive teaching and assessment practices that are responsive to diverse learners, communities, and a global society
• Develop the ability to work within and across a range of community and professional contexts
• Develop dispositions and skills to critically reflect on and learn from their practice
• Acquire a strong sense of agency and the capacity to become leaders in their field

Opportunities for Graduates: MCE Master’s program students are eligible to apply for a teaching license in the State of Ohio once they successfully complete the courses listed on their program of study, the required Ohio Assessment for Educators licensure examinations, and the Professional Internship in Teaching. MCE program graduates enjoy a career teaching language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies in elementary, middle and high schools in Ohio and around the nation.

Graduation Requirements:  The following requirements must be satisfied to graduate:

1. Complete 51 credit hours in 15 courses as follows, with no grade below a “C” (course names listed below)
   • Research:  EDTE 6940 and EDTE 6670
   • Curriculum and Instruction: EDSP 5700, EDTE 5100, EDTE 5600,
   • Reading: EDTE 5300, EDTE 5400, EDTE 5510, EDTE 6932
   • Content-specific Pedagogy, select two of the following options by program: EDTE 5300, EDTE 5400, EDTE 5510, EDTE 6932
   • Professional Internship: EDPL 5620, EDPL 5630, EDPL 5650, EDPL 6920

Culminating Experience:  There is no comprehensive or qualifying exam. The capstone experience consists of a thesis or masters research project. For both options, students engage in educational research focused on the application of principles and practices acquired in the program.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants whose qualifications satisfy all the following elements are reviewed for admission to the Master of Education in Middle Child Education program:

1. Bachelor’s degree in an accredited program in a program related to the area of licensure
2. GPA 3.0 or higher
3. GRE quantitative reasoning score of 290 or higher (verbal and quantitative combined)

The application requires three letters of recommendation, an autobiography, transcripts (undergraduate and graduate when applicable), and an academic writing sample. Transfer credit may be considered.

International Students:  This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.
