Program Overview: The Master’s in Teaching and Learning is designed for individuals who would like to complete a one-year (30 semester hour) master’s degree in teaching and learning without licensure (whether domestic or international). This master’s program is designed for individuals who will not be teaching in P-12 schools and not seeking licensure.

Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will increase their understanding of key principles of teaching and learning.
  • Students will apply the principles of teaching and learning to learners of all ages through case studies and/or appropriate field-based experiences.
  • Students will apply relevant action research practices in a real-world setting (i.e. develop a research question and collect data to determine the effectiveness of a project designed to address the research question).

Opportunities for Graduates: This program prepares students to work in education-related settings.

Graduation Requirements:  This program requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of credits in Core, Curriculum and Instruction, and elective coursework. The M.Ed. in Teaching and Learning is a one-year program that can be completed in three academic terms. The master’s research project is the culminating project for the degree.  No thesis, qualifying or comprehensive exams are required.

    • EDSP 5700 - Nature and Needs of Persons with Exceptionalities - 3

  • Curriculum and Instruction courses - 12 credits
    • EDTE 5100 - Principles of Curriculum - 3
    • EDTE 6160 - Managing and Monitoring Student Learning - 3
    • EDTE 6600 - Principles of Teaching - 3
    • EDPL 6920 - Internship: Theory Into Practice - 3             
  • Elective courses - 6 credits
    • In consultation with advisor, select relevant courses from appropriate departments in the Patton College of Education or across the University based on individualized career plan.

Applicants who are admitted to the program must meet with their assigned academic advisor prior to beginning any course work. All students must complete an approved program prior to the end of their first semester of study.

Culminating Experience: A Master’s Research Project [MRP] is the culminating project for the degree.  

Admission Requirements: Domestic Student Admission Requirements:  Candidates seeking admission to the master’s program in Teaching and Learning must have earned a Bachelor’s degree have an undergraduate point average of at least 3.00 (4.00 point scale) minimum, a score of at least 290 Verbal and Quantitative combined) on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), three letters of recommendation, an academic writing sample, and an Autobiography/Personal Statement of Professional Goals.

International Student Admission Requirements

Note: These criteria are for students whose first language is not English.

  1. To demonstrate English language proficiency, international applicants or applicants whose first language is not English must submit one of two tests completed within the previous 2 years: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This is required even if the applicant has previously attended a U.S. institution or has (or will have) a master’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution. The Department of Teacher Education will NOT waive the English proficiency requirements outlined below under any circumstances:
  • Unconditional Admission WITH Eligibility for Funding
    • TOEFL iBT – 80 Composite, all Section Scores = 17
    • IELTS – 6.5 Composite, all Bands 6.5
  • Unconditional Admission WITHOUT Funding Eligibility
    • iBT – 70 Composite, Writing 17, all other Section Scores of 15
    • IELTS – 6.0 Composite, all Bands
  1. Certified Transcripts - From all institutions of higher learning showing the award of a bachelor’s degree and from any academic work after the conferral of the bachilor’s degree.
  2. Score of at least 290 (verbal and quantitative) on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
  3. Three letters of recommendation – Two of the recommendations should be from college professors and one from an employer or professional colleague. The recommendations should be submitted in English; or, if the recommendations are in the native language, the original should be accompanied by a certified translation.
  4. Autobiography – This is not to exceed two typewritten pages. The autobiography should be submitted in English; or, if the autobiography is written in the native language, the original should be accompanied by a certified translation. This autobiography, as a minimum, should include the following information: educational experiences; professional work experiences; career goals; future expectations; major influencing factors in your life; professional organizations; why you are selecting Ohio University and the particular program you are applying to. You may include other information that you feel is relevant.
  5. Academic writing sample (examples may include published paper, paper submitted for a course, or master’s project thesis).
  6. Proof of Financial Responsibility –This form must be received by the Graduate College, RTEC 220, before the I-20 can be issued. The form is available on the Forms page of the Graduate College website.

This program allows full-time residency in Athens, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.
