Certificate Overview: The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Post-Master’s Certificate prepares students who already hold a master’s in nursing to complete the essential didactic and clinical components to be eligible for certification as a PMHNP. The PMHNP provides advanced psychiatric skills needed to offer therapy, prescribe psychiatric medications, and provide clinical management to under-served patients with mental illness and chronic medical co-morbidities. Upon certificate completion, students are eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner examination for the Psychiatric-Mental Health NP (Across the Lifespan) national certification.
Clinical practicum experiences occur in mental-health care settings under the supervision of qualified preceptors for a minimum of 500 direct care hours. The certificate can be completed in 4 semesters. https://www.ohio.edu/chsp/nursing/graduate/certificates

Opportunities upon Completion: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) offer primary care services to the psychiatric-mental health population. Graduates of the PMHNP program will be eligible for national board certification and may practice in variety of settings including mental health clinics, correctional facilities and private practice.
Completion Requirements: This post-Master’s certificate requires 20 credit hours of didactic/clinical courses to fulfill certificate requirements and eligibility criteria for national certification as a PMHNP. These courses are:
- NRSE 6411 - Neurobiological and Theoretical Bases for Psychiatric Mental Health in Advanced Nursing Practice (3)
- NRSE 6412 - Psychotherapeutic Treatment Modalities for Advanced Nursing Practice (3)
- NRSE 6413 - Assessment & Management of Mental Health Disorders for Advanced Nursing Practice I (3)
- NRSE 6414 - Assessment and Management of Mental Health Disorders for Advanced Nursing Practice II (3)
- NRSE 6823 - Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum for Advanced Nursing Practice I (2)
- NRSE 6824 - Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum for Advanced Nursing Practice II (3)
- NRSE 6825 - Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum for Advanced Nursing Practice III (3)
Culminating Experience: The culminating experience for the major includes a portfolio evaluation of having met specified standards
Financial Aid Eligibility Information:
- Non-degree-seeking students enrolled in this certificate are not eligible for federal financial aid.
- Current degree-seeking students may use federal financial aid only for 1) coursework fulfilling requirements of their degree, including required elective hours, or 2) coursework toward a second financial aid-eligible program.
- Students receiving federal financial aid may not take courses for this certificate unless they are also enrolled full-time (9 hours) in their degree program during the same academic term. Financial aid may be used for courses that count toward both degree requirements and the certificate.
Admission Requirements:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with current active license
- Completed a master’s degree in nursing from an accredited university
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or equivalent on previous graduate course work
- Three letters of recommendation
- Goal statement reflecting professional/educational background and goals
- Resume/curriculum vitae
- Faculty interview

Students must have completed the following courses or the equivalent with a minimum of a B (3.0):
- NRSE 6221 - Health Appraisal for Nurse Practitioners
- NRSE 6230 - Advanced Pharmacology
- NRSE 6210 - Advanced Pathophysiology
International Students: This certificate program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.
