SOC 3500 - Social Research Methods


Teaches students the techniques that sociologists use to identify research problems, gather data, analyze data, and reach conclusions about their research ideas. Students learn how to identify a research problem, design a research proposal, employ various techniques for gathering data, learn ways of summarizing and analyzing data, and how to effectively communicate findings. A strong emphasis is placed on ethical considerations throughout the research process. Students are equipped with the tools to design and carry out a research project ethically and effectively and to critically evaluate research presented by others.

Requisites: SOC 1000 and 3000 and one of the following statistics courses (ANTH/SOC 2500 or COMS 3250 or ECON 3810 or GEOG 2710 or MATH 2500 or PSY 2110 or QBA 2010). ANTH/SOC 2500 is preferred for Sociology, SOC-CRIM, and Sociology Pre-Law majors.

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

  • Students will be able to critically evaluate the methodological design of published sociological research, identifying strengths and weaknesses.
