WGSS 2500 - Feminist Manifesto


This course focuses on the way that feminist movements in the U.S. from the Second Wave to the present moment have used the manifesto’s powerful combination of politics and emotion to define causes, establish communities, and envision a better future. Students read and analyze a variety of feminist and queer manifestos from the 1960s to the present, all with an eye towards producing their own manifesto.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe the various forms, contents, and styles of current and historical feminist manifestos.
  • Students will be able to analyze, interpret, and evaluate feminist manifestos from the 1960s onward.
  • Students will be able to describe the creative process involved in producing a feminist manifesto, recognizing the connection between those processes and historically important manifestos.
  • Students will be able to identify critical issues in the field of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality studies through an exploration of feminist manifestos from the 1880s to present.
  • Students will be able to connect changing political and cultural contexts to the production of feminist manifestos, and assess the impact of feminist manifestos produced over nearly 60 years.
  • Students will be able to communicate a specific position in the form of a manifesto while recognizing the assumptions and limitations of their position.
  • Students will be able to evaluate the relevance of their current context, as well as historical contexts, in presenting an analysis of feminist manifestos.
  • Students will be able to conduct rhetorical analysis of feminist manifestos to develop a comprehensive analysis, and communicate their conclusions in a logical and clear manner using analytical and persuasive writing.
  • Students will be able to engage constructively with others in a team context, contribute to the development of ideas during team meetings, and advance the work of the groups toward a common goal.
  • Students will be able to foster a positive team climate and manage team conflict to achieve a common team goal.
