CSD 1120 - Elementary American Sign Language II


This is the second in a sequence of four American Sign Language (ASL) courses. Continuation of vocabulary and skill development to learn signs from context clues and sign analysis. Complex grammatical structures are introduced and development of sentence structure is continued. Students continue to develop fingerspelling proficiency while increasing the speed and length of words. Includes an introduction to linguistic and cultural aspects of the Deaf community as they relate to literature and current topics of debate.

Requisites: C- or better in CSD 1110 or 3850 or DSI 1110 and WARNING: No credit for this course if taken after the following: DSI 2110 or 2120 or CSD 2110 and No credit for both this course and the following (always deduct credit for first course taken): DSI 1120
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will demonstrate comprehension and production of 5-8 letter finger spelled words at a slow but natural speed, and single words at a moderate speed.
  • Students will demonstrate comprehension and use of intermediate level vocabulary in complex sentence structures that utilize conditional, embedded clauses and causation.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of the history and types of storytelling in ASL and the use of Role Shifting in ASL story telling.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of the key distinctions between cochlear implants and hearing aids.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of the meaning and function of Children of Deaf Adults.
  • Students will describe the varied reactions to the use of cochlear implants within the Deaf community.
  • Students will use and comprehend numbers in relation to pronouns, weight and height, and measurement.
  • Students will use grammatical forms with accuracy.
  • Students will use vocabulary learned in class with accuracy.
