NRSE 2241 - Pharmacology in Nursing Provides an introduction of basic concepts and principles related to pharmacology (pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics) and the nurse’s role in drug therapy. Major classifications of drugs will be examined and issues associated with drug therapy in society discussed.
Requisites: NRSE 2111 and 2121 Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate an understanding of the major drug classifications in terms of their mechanism of action, therapeutic use, adverse effects and nursing implications
- Develop an understanding of the role research plays in pharmacology and drug therapy
- Discuss the benefits and risks of alternative and over-the-counter (OTC) drug therapy
- Discuss the concepts and principles related to pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics
- Discuss the role and professional responsibilities of the nurse in relation to drug therapy
- Explain the legal, ethical, and interdisciplinary implications for the nurse in the administration of drug therapy
- Explain the relevant influencing factors that impact drug therapy
- Utilize critical thinking and decision-making in the safe implementation of drug therapy
