PBIO 3080 - Structural Botany


Diversity of vascular plants as reflected by structural and reproductive features of major groups; emphasis on evolution of diversity through systematically significant adaptations as reflected by the paleontological record. 2 lec, 4 lab.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Conceptual understanding of phylogenetic systematics and the construction of systematic trees.
  • Knowledge of fevolution, structure, and reproduction of Psilotopsidaa, Pteropsida, and Equisetopsida.
  • Knowledge of evolution, structure, and reproduction of Lycopodiales, Selaginellales, and Isoetales.
  • Knowledge of evolution, structure, and reproduction of chcads, Ginkgo, Conifers, and Gnetophytes.
  • Knowledge of evolution, structure, and reproduction of extinct seed plant clades.
  • Knowledge of novel vegetative and reproductive characters of flowering plants.
  • Knowledge of structure and reproduction of Zosterophyllopsida.
  • Knowledge of the first vascular plants - rhyniophytes, zosterophylls, trimerophytes.
  • Knowledge of vascular plant diversity as expressed through tree-based phylogenies.
  • Understanding of basic structural, reproductive, and systematic diversity of flowering plants.
  • Understanding of embryophyte organography and the evolution of stems, leaves and roots.
  • Understanding of evolution and diversity for Lycophytina.
  • Understanding of evolution of seed-plant reproduction and origin of seed plants, Pteridospermopsida.
  • Understanding of evolution of seed-plant vegetative structure, Progymnospermopsida.
  • Understanding of evolutionary charnge that led to the origin of vascular plants.
  • Understanding of evoluton and relationships among major plant groups.
  • Understanding of geologica/paleontological concepts upon which plant evolution is based.
  • Understanding of the origin, evolution, and diversity of Euphyllophytina.
  • Understanding of the origin, evolution/diversification, and importance of flowering plants.
  • Working knowledge of modes of plant fossil preservation and the interpretation of plant fossils.
  • Working knowledge of paleontological evidence for plant evolution.
  • Working knowledge of plant anatomy as reflected by concepts of cells, tissues, tissue systems and organs.
