CSD 2120 - Intermediate American Sign Language II


This is the fourth in a sequence of four American Sign Language (ASL) courses. Focus is placed on the expressive use of ASL through storytelling. Expressive use of ASL grammar is expanded with an emphasis on developing questioning and answering skills. Conversational strategies are learned to help students maintain an ASL conversation appropriately. Includes English/ASL translation of concepts and idioms.

Requisites: C- or better in CSD 2110 or 3870 or DSI 2110 and WARNING: No credit for both this course and the following (always deduct credit for first course taken): DSI 2120
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate correct translation of concepts between English and ASL.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate correct use of vocabulary necessary to talk about advanced topics (including health conditions, rules and making major life decisions) using ASL.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate storytelling ability by signing a story utilizing ASL alphabet handshapes.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to maintain a conversation in ASL with fewer errors.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to correctly translate English Idioms into ASL and ASL idioms into English.
