DESCRIPTION OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION PH.D. PROGRAMS

The following specializations at the doctoral level are currently seeking applicants:

  • Mathematics Education
  • Science Education
  • Social Studies Education

I. STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY AND EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS
The purpose of the doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction is to cultivate leader-educators and practitioners who share our commitment to lifelong learning and serving society responsibly as change agents in meeting diverse human and social needs.

Individuals within this program focus on content and methods to improve educational practices and professional development through inquiry. The doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction promotes reflective educational inquiry in four ways:

  1. to create deep understanding of a selected specialization that provides context for inquiry into curriculum and instruction;
  2. to develop understanding of the cultural contexts of curriculum and instruction;
  3. to develop use of research tools appropriate to guide inquiry; and,
  4. to apply and disseminate the outcomes/products of inquiry.


II. COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAM
It is the responsibility of the student’s Curriculum and Instruction Doctoral Program Committee to set and examine the program
of studies reflecting the student’s individual needs and interests. Curriculum and Instruction is the theme of the program and is found
within the core, the specialization and the cognate. The Ph.D. program includes experiences organized in four categories. The
program includes a coherent course of study that provides flexibility while at the same time appropriately supports the development of
educational leaders. The four categories are: (A) The “core” including cultural context, teaching and learning, leadership, and
practicum and mentorship, (B) Research, (C) Specializations/Cognate, and (D) Dissertation.
