Financial Economics

Purpose
The Master of Financial Economics (MFE) program in Athens is designed for full-time students who desire to find employment in financial services. The financial economics curriculum is based on the Candidate Body of Knowledge developed by CFA Institute®. CFA® Institute awards the Chartered Financial Analyst, CFA, designation to those who pass a series of three written examinations covering the Candidate Body of Knowledge.

The Department of Economics in collaboration with the College of Business, Department of Finance and School of Accountancy offers a Master’s of Arts in Financial Economics (MFE). The program is listed by CFA Institute® as one of the universities in the world that adopts the CFA curriculum in the graduate program.

Difference from Applied Economics                                
The current MA program in economics is a theory program with some application emphasis. It prepares the students for Ph.D. programs, employment opportunities at government agencies such a the Department of Labor, the Department of Commerce, and the Federal Reserve Banks. The MFE program prepares students for employment opportunities in the financial sector. The program plan was designed after interviewing with executives of financial companies like, Merrill Lynch, Investment Management & Research, Inc, Franklin Advisors, and National City Corporation.


Admission Requirements 

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Basic knowledge of windows, a word processor, spreadsheet, and power point
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a scale of 4.0 is required
  • Results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) are not required but highly recommended.  For  information about these exams call (740) 597-1537 or visit www.ohiou.edu/etc.
  • Result of TOEFL for international student
  • An official copy of all college/university transcripts including one showing a baccalaureate from an accredited college or university
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • An application completed online
  • Personal statement outlining the career objectives of the candidate
