The Spanish section of the Department of Modern Languages offers a Master of Arts in Spanish through a two-year program with summer teaching possibilities. Both thesis and non-thesis programs are available. Other highlights to our program include: multiple study abroad possibilities in Sevilla and Toledo, Spain, Cuenca, Ecuador and Mérida, Mexico; options for current high school teachers to enhance their skills; a FLES program in area elementary schools; enhanced language options; various conferences held on campus; and an opportunity to work with the Institute for the Empirical Study of Language.

Admission: You may apply for admission to the graduate degree program in Spanish in any quarter, but preference will be given to applications received by January 15. Application materials must be received at least two quarters prior to the quarter for which you are seeking admission to be considered for financial aid for the following academic year.

Applications must be submitted electronically to the Graduate College and include:  two official transcripts from post-secondary schools, three letters of recommendation (preferably from your professors); a written statement of purpose in Spanish; and a digital sample of your spoken Spanish skills if you are a non-native Spanish speaker.

(International students must also send copies of diplomas, official TOEFL scores and scores on the Test of Spoken English).

Scholarships: Scholarships are available on a competitive basis and generally consist of Teaching Associate positions. Students receive a tuition waiver and a stipend. The tuition waiver can also be applied to two summer sessions. Qualified teaching assistants may have an opportunity to teach in one of the department’s programs abroad.

Qualifications: All applicants must have an advanced level of proficiency in the Spanish language and should have completed an undergraduate degree in Spanish (40 quarter hours beyond intermediate Spanish). All completed applications will be considered

Program: Eighteen graduate courses in the major field are required for the M.A. in Spanish. These consist of courses in Spanish Peninsular literature, Latin American literature, Spanish linguistics, and Modern Language pedagogy courses. Spanish teaching assistants are required to register for one hour of 699 each of the first three quarters they are on financial appointment. To complete the M.A. degree you must pass a written and an oral comprehensive examination based on coursework and a reading list. Students may also be interested in writing a thesis in addition to taking comprehensive exams.
