Program Overview

The Honors Tutorial College major in English offers students a more independent approach to study than is usually available in the traditional classroom setting. The tutorial, a weekly one-on-one meeting with a faculty member, is the core of the program. While the tutorial hour focuses on students’ interpretations of assigned texts, the tutorial program as a whole centers on the mutual engagement of student and tutor in the study of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama, including the historical and cultural contexts of these works. Students take an introductory tutorial, three tutorials in British and American literature, two specialized tutorials in an area of interest, and two semesters of tutorials focused on writing an honors thesis.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Students are selected by the director of studies of the English tutorial program and the Honors Tutorial College on the basis of superior ability and sustained motivation. In most cases, admission to the program requires a 30 composite score on the ACT (1300 combined on the SAT), as well as high school class standing in the top 10%. Supplemental requirements for application include two academic letters of reference and a writing sample that analyzes a literary text. The priority deadline for application is December 1; admission interviews are held in January.

Change of Program Policy

First-year students at Ohio University may apply to transfer into the English tutorial program and the Honors Tutorial College. These students must meet the same entrance requirements as entering freshmen. The priority deadline for application is December 1st.

External Transfer Admission

First-year students at another institution may also apply to transfer into the English tutorial program and the Honors Tutorial College. These students must meet the same entrance requirements as entering freshmen. The priority deadline for application is December 1st; and admission interviews are held in January.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Most graduates of the honors tutorial program in English pursue advanced degrees in law, business, library and information science, and English studies at the master’s and doctoral level. Graduates also develop careers in publishing, newswriting, and administration, participate in teaching and service programs, including the Peace Corps and Teach for America; and perform research and writing for corporate and nonprofit organizations.
