Program Overview

The Community Leadership track prepares graduates for employment in areas such as workforce development, human services leadership, youth leadership (4-H, Extension Services), after school programs, early child care administration, corporate offices, and non-profit organizations.

All students with majors in Family and Consumer Sciences Education learn and apply principles of consumer economics, financial literacy, and resource management; learn and apply theory and research on human development, interpersonal relationships, and family systems to build and strengthen individual family assets; know and demonstrate the role of food and nutrition in constructing a healthy lifestyle; and investigate and plan career pathways and research transitioning processes through the life cycle. All FCS education majors receive Serv-Safe Certification.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education empowers individuals and families throughout their lives to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse, global society. The unique focus is on work, families and interrelationships. Students beginning this major at an Ohio University regional campus have the opportunity to acquire most of the courses recommended for the freshmen and sophomore years.

Admissions Information

For Freshman/First-Year Admission, Change of Program or External Transfer

No requirements beyond University admission requirements. To obtain the documents necessary to change your major or externally transfer into the program you will need to speak with a representative in the Office of Student Affairs located on the 1st floor of McCracken Hall in Room 102. The main office can be reached at 740.593.4400.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Graduates of the FCS Community Leadership track can acquired jobs in the human services field, in businesses related to the courses required in this varied curriculum, programs working with adolescents, private day care, and other programs such as Peace Corps.

Department Level Requirements for Human and Consumer Sciences


The Department of Human and Consumer Sciences has no particular entry or graduation requirements beyond those of the College and the University. However, requirements differ considerably from program to program. Consult with your adviser to ensure proper fulfillment of those requirements.

Minor or Certificate Program


Students must complete an advisor-approved minor or certificate program to complete the requirements of the degree. Hours will vary 18-24, depending on the minor/certificate program selected.
