Certificate Overview

In today’s ever changing and more data driven technologically based industries, black belt training is often considered the backbone of an organization’s operational excellence program. They generally follow and implement the DMAIC process (Design, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control). The total credit hours to earn the certificate is 11 hours spread across 5 courses. Typical students in the Black Belt Certification program would be Master’s of Engineering Management students. Students who haven’t previously taken a college-level statistics course will be required to take EMGT 6100 - Statistics for Engineering Management .

Certificate Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the application of the Six Sigma process improvement methodology to improve a real-world process problem associated with their current work environment.
  • Gather, format, and analyze data and translate statistical results into practical decisions.
  • Perform two-tailed and single-tailed hypothesis tests.
  • Perform multiple factor ANOVA tests and Multiple Regression analysis techniques.
  • Validate measurement systems for use in process performance measurement.
  • Identify situations for applying Monte Carlo and Discrete Event simulation techniques.
  • Measure process and system capability ratios
  • Demonstrate before and after capability improvement.

Opportunities upon Completion

Individuals with black belt training play a critical role as change agents, trainers, mentors and project leaders to improve an organization’s bottom line. Black belts solve problems by developing and implementing change initiatives. They often become a necessary member of an organization’s leadership team.

Certificate Relationship to Parent Degree Program

The following courses can be applied to the Master of Engineering Management degree:
