DANC 3405 - Dance Pedagogy


Principles of teaching dance and their practical application for children and adults. Focus is on what “pedagogy” means and how it differs from curriculum and lesson planning. Includes lecture, discussion, and observation of studio dance classes in several different genres.

Requisites: Dance major or minor
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 practicum
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Articulate an understanding of dance pedagogy through discussion and writing.
  • Compare and contrast different concepts of pedagogy and dance as art and education.
  • Create movement class materials appropriate to specific age groups and levels of students.
  • Critically reflect on different applications for creative movement.
  • Critically reflect on one’s own pedagogical approach to dance instruction.
  • Plan and implement a movement class.
  • Students will understand the distinction between creative movement and technique based approaches to dance pedagogy.
