EDTE 2200 - Phonics and the Structure of Language This course provides information and training in the foundations of phonics instruction. In this course, candidates explore the historical, linguistic, and instructional framework related to phonics skill development and learn how to adjust instruction for the needs of all learners.
Requisites: Admission to Teacher Candidacy Credit Hours: 3 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to identify orthographic patterns based on their frequency of occurrence in the English language.
- Students will be able to provide appropriate phonics instruction at the phonemic, syllabic, and morphemic levels.
- Students will be able to create and use multisensory instructional strategies to blend phonemic and syllabic units of language.
- Students will be able to model instructional strategies for decoding and encoding phonemic, syllabic, and morphemic units of language.
- Students will be able to describe the nature of the English language relative to its orthography and etymology.
