NRSE 4510 - Professional Nursing Practice


Focuses on transition from technical to professional nursing. Addresses the scope and standards of professional nursing practice, the theoretical basis of practice, the ethical and legal components of practice, information management and application of patient care technology, and interprofessional communication and collaboration for improving patient health outcomes.

Requisites: BSN or school nurse major and RN license or ND9988
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 seminar

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to analyze the impact of historical events on the practice of professional nursing.
  • Students will be able to apply general systems theory as a framework for nursing.
  • Students will be able to apply the characteristics of a profession to the discipline of nursing.
  • Students will be able to describe state and national statutes, rules, and regulations that authorize and define professional nursing practice.
  • Students will be able to discuss the implications of healthcare policy on issues of access, equity, affordability, and social justice in healthcare delivery.
  • Students will be able to examine ethical standards related to data security, regulatory requirements, confidentiality, and clients’ right to privacy.
  • Students will be able to examine inter and intraprofessional communication and collaborative skills required to deliver evidence-based, team-based, patient-centered care.
  • Students will be able to examine legislative and regulatory processes relevant to the provision of health care.
  • Students will be able to describe the impact of sociocultural, economic, legal, and political factors influencing healthcare delivery and practice.
  • Students will be able to identify characteristics of the adult learner, and apply them to one’s own development and professional growth.
  • Students will be able to recognize the role of information technology in improving patient care outcomes and creating a safe care environment.
  • Students will be able to use an ethical framework to evaluate the impact of social policies on health care, especially for vulnerable populations.
