IHS 2220 - Cultural Competency in Interprofessional Health Care

• Students will be able to recognize and consider multiple cultural perspectives regarding health assessments, treatments, and utilization of services from the interprofessional team.
• Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the importance of cultural humility in the process of optimizing patient care in interaction with health care professionals.
• Students will be able to describe factors involved in communicating with patients and health care collaborators who are from diverse cultures.
• Students will be able to describe the cultural diversity and individual differences that characterize patients, populations, and the health care team.
• Students will be able to describe the culture of the interprofessional health care team vs. the culture of the “lone healer”.
• Students will be able to describe the influence of culture on healthcare perceptions and how the interprofessional health care team may work together to provide best possible treatment.
• Students will be able to explain the meaning of the term “cultural competency”.
• Students will be able to identify cultural barriers present or absent with respect to the interprofessional team and the team’s assessment and treatment of patient.
• Student will be able to use knowledge of health-related cultural/ethnic beliefs, values and practices to design a plan of care for culturally and ethnically diverse populations working collaboratively with the interprofessional health care team.
