ECEE 2500 - Learning to Read: Theory and Practice
Grounded in the science of reading, this course introduces theories of language acquisition and reading development, focusing on Gough and Tunmer’s Simple View of Reading, and builds background knowledge of developmentally appropriate literacy practices. In this course, candidates explore a continuum of typical literacy development and begin to explore how to develop and differentiate instruction to meet individual learner needs.
Requisites: ECEE 2001 concurrent, Teacher Candidacy, and admission to Early Childhood and Elementary Education or Child Development major
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to use their knowledge of the theoretical foundations of the Simple View of Reading to inform P-5 classroom reading instruction.
- Students will be able to explain the relationship between the development of oral language and early literacy.
- Students will be able to effectively use interactive read alouds and literature discussions in the P-5 classroom.
- Students will be able to effectively and appropriately use guided reading instruction in the P-5 classroom.
- Students will be able to effectively and appropriately use word study in the P-5 classroom.
- Students will be able to develop and differentiate literacy instruction to meet the needs of individual learners.
