HSLS 2080 - Phonetics Surveys the theoretical foundation and practical application of the scientific study of speech sounds. Topics include the production, classification, and transcription of speech sounds. Students will learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for transcription. Activities include lectures and transcription exercises.
Requisites: HSLS 1080 Credit Hours: 3 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Apply the IPA to transcribe spoken English.
- Demonstrate the ability to discriminate speech sounds.
- Describe how speech sounds are produced.
