DANC 2710 - Black Dance Forms


Dance forms from the African diaspora and influenced by African Americans have had a profound effect on American social, popular, and artistic dance. This course combines lectures, viewings, readings, discussions, and studio experiences to familiarize students with these forms, and to critically examine the impact of these dances on American culture.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to employ the principles, terminology, and methods of Black dance forms as a genre of American dance.
  • Students will be able to interpret Black dance forms as contemporary artistic expression.
  • Students will be able to explain the relationship of contemporary Black dance forms to diasporic experiences and cultural values of African American cultures.
  • Students will be able to critically describe how race and culture have impacted Black dance forms and their reception in the United States.
  • Students will be able to use information from research sources to develop a comprehensive analysis of a topic relevant to Black dance forms.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of Black dance forms through physical practice in studio-based experiences.
  • Students will be able to work constructively and meaningfully on a group project that integrates the knowledge gained from individual course activities.
