HIST 3868 - British Empire in the 20th Century Evaluation of the fate of the British Empire in the 20th- century, focusing on the global impact as well as the process of decolonization. Topics include the question of imperial overstretch; development of the Commonwealth; India’s independence; and Britain’s withdrawal from its smaller dependencies in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East through the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997.
