PHYS 3702 - Intermediate Laboratory - Photons & Nucleons X-ray diffraction and x-ray spectroscopy. Nuclear decay modes and alpha, beta, & gamma decay spectroscopy. Nuclear reactions and scattering. Principles of operation of alpha, beta, x-ray, gamma, and neutron detectors and data acquisition systems.
Requisites: PHYS 2053 Credit Hours: 2 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 laboratory Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Be able to use x-rays for measuring crystal structure and elemental composition.
- Become familiar with detectors/data acquisition systems for alpha & beta particles, x-rays and gamma-rays.
- Develop ability to probe nuclear decay by measuring energy/intensity of alpha, beta, and gamma rays.
