EQU 2090 - Equine Health II


The course emphasizes equine safety and health in facilities, training, reproduction, work areas, and during transportation. Equine emergencies and the development of safety protocols are examined.

Requisites: EQU 1080
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to define safe facilities for horses.
  • Students will be able to evaluate facilities by identifying hazards and recommending improvements.
  • Students will be able to develop a plan to produce a healthy foal from stallion and broodmare selection, breeding, gestation, and foaling.
  • Students will be able to develop protocols to care for horses during a disaster.
  • Students will be able to evaluate the horse for signs of pain during illness.
  • Students will be able to assess wounds, plan for care, and understand the stages of wound healing.
  • Students will be able to recognize allergic reactions and how to treat them.
  • Students will be able to evaluate and respond to emergencies, including: circulatory, dermatological, gastrointestinal, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurological, ocular, respiratory, and toxins.
