Mission

The History Department furthers the effective understanding of the past for use in the contemporary world, exposes students to the histories and cultures of the world’s peoples, and provides high-quality preparation for a variety of careers (opens in a new window), including education, public history, media, law, and the government. The department’s mission is integral to Ohio University’s commitment to strong undergraduate programs, with a liberal arts core, and strong graduate and professional programs.

Special Opportunities

The History Department offers numerous opportunities for students to enhance their educational experience, prepare for future studies and careers, and earn distinction. The Contemporary History Institute (opens in a new window) and a number of endowed lectureships bring distinguished speakers to campus throughout the year. A significant number of our majors choose pre-law , where they receive advising and assistance for applying to law schools. Many of our majors pursue internships (opens in a new window) for course credit at the Athens and Ohio Historical Societies, the State Department, the U.S. Holocaust Museum, the National Archives, and elsewhere. The Undergraduate History Conference that takes place each spring allows students the opportunity to present original research to peers, faculty, and administrators. Students with a G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher may elect to earn Departmental Honors (opens in a new window) by completing a research project, usually a senior thesis written under the direction of a faculty member. Each year the department also awards more than half a dozen fellowships, scholarships, and prizes (opens in a new window) to undergraduate majors.
