Program Overview

The Bachelors of Science in Applied Management (BSAM) degree is primarily intended for students who have completed a two-year degree program (90 or more quarter hours or 60 or more semester hours) from an accredited community college, regional campus, or technical college, and who seek to further their educations by completing the requirements for a baccalaureate degree. The program provides students with knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for advancement in the field of management. For the student with an associate degree, the program integrates the general and technical skills developed within associate degree programs with the professional skills and dispositions inculcated in a bachelor’s of management degree program. With appropriate advising, students will take a sequence of courses that will:

  1. meet Ohio University’s General Education and baccalaureate degree requirements;
  2. follow naturally from and amplify the learning experiences in their associate degree subject areas; and
  3. qualify them for an immediate career in management or for entry into a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program.

Students must have an overall 2.0 GPA and 90 or more quarter hours or 60 or more semester hours earned.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

This program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and disposition necessary for advancement in their chosen management careers. The fundamental objective of the program is to provide the management skills and values necessary for success in the complex business environment.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the applied management major, students will:

  • Understand the basic processes and behaviors that underlie the practice of supervision.
  • Obtain the supervisory management skills necessary to lead organizations.
  • Develop managerial judgment in order to assess business risk and provide a strong understanding of competitive challenges of competitive industries.
  • Understand the importance of ethical principles and company values.
  • Gain opportunities to practice and improve written communication skills, which are essential for career success.
  • Gain the knowledge to conduct marketing research, how to develop a consumer survey.
  • Focus on the use of accounting information for strategic planning and decision-making in business organizations.
  • Use financial information to evaluate the financial position and performance of a firm, both in relation to other firms and over time.
  • Understand the process of management information systems and integrating business and information systems perspectives.
  • Be able to describe how quality and process analysis can impact the effectiveness and efficiency of a firm.
  • Have hands-on experience in crafting business strategy, reasoning about strategic options.
  • Have the opportunity to achieve personal career objectives with hands on experience.
