Program Overview

Prepares students to work with infants, toddlers and preschoolers. It includes basic child development knowledge and knowledge of child guidance and management and  curriculum development for young children.

External Transfer Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Prepares students to work in center based preschools such as Head Start.

AA1106 Child Development & ND8837 Pre-Early Childhood Education 

If your major is AA1106 Child Development, your academic advisor may sign a permission slip to enroll you in a course that is required for AA1106 and has the prerequisite of Admission to Teacher Candidacy.

If you major code is ND8837 Pre-Early Childhood Education, your academic advisor may NOT sign a permission slip for courses that have the prerequisite of Admission to Teacher Candidacy. You must first have been admitted to Teacher Candidacy.

If your major code is AA1106 Child Development and ND8837 Pre-Early Childhood Education, i.e.  you have been simultaneously admitted to both programs, and you seek to enroll in coursework that has the prerequisite of Admission to Teacher Candidacy, you must meet the enrollment criteria of BOTH programs.

Major Hour Requirments


The child development major requires a minimum of 60 hours.

General Education Requirements


Complete the following course:

Tier I Quantitative Skills


Complete 3 hours of mathematics at the MATH 1101  level or higher.

Tier II Requirements


Complete the following courses, for a minimum of 21 semester credit hours:

  • At least one Tier II Cross-Cultural Perspectives course
  • At least one Tier II Fine Arts course
  • At least one Tier II Humanities and Literature course
  • At least one Tier II Natural Sciences course (Science with a Lab) Credit Hours: 4
