Program Overview

The Human Resource Management Certificate focuses on developing applied skills and readiness for entry-level human resource professional employment. Certificate graduates will understand business strategy, be equipped to determine appropriate human resource management strategies and practices to deliver results and be capable of improving organizational health and longevity. Students will also learn how to work effectively on project teams, succeed in complex assignments, and meet strategic and operational objectives.

Freshman/First-Year Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Change of Program Policy

Criteria for admission into the Human Resource Management Certificate program include:

  1. Submission to the Management Department office of a completed application form;
  2. Submission to the Management Department office of a copy of the applicant’s most recent DARS report indicating an overall G.P.A. of 2.75 or higher;
  3. Submission to the Management Department office of the applicant’s resume demonstrating the characteristics that support the students interest in human resource management, for example, an above-average GPA, strong work ethic, previous HR experience or courses involving organizational or human resource management competencies, prior work and leadership positions, membership in student SHRM, etc.; and
  4. Completion by the applicant of a panel interview, if requested, with Management Department faculty. Further, applicants demonstrating past leadership experience, either paid or unpaid, are preferred. Application forms may be picked up from the Management Department office.

Admission to the certificate program is expected to be competitive. Admission cannot be guaranteed to all students meeting the admission criteria. The Human Resource Management Certificate program will admit students up to its enrollment ceiling, and students judged to have the highest probability of success will be admitted. Members of groups historically underrepresented in business will receive special consideration.

Each semester, those accepted into the Human Resource Management Certificate program will have their progress tracked by DARS. An overall G.P.A. of 2.5 in certificate courses is required. The Human Resource Management Certificate will be awarded only to students who have been accepted into the program and who have fulfilled all certificate requirements. Students will need to consult the Management Department office before the deadline for graduation to ensure that all requirements have been fulfilled and the certificate will be awarded.

External Transfer Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements. Once students are admitted to the University they would follow the same admissions criteria as internal students.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the entry-level Human Resource Specialist positions will grow at a healthy average of nine percent between the years 2016-2026 with a median salary of $59,180. Interested students within the College of Business pursuing the management major can deepen their career preparation by pursuing the field of Human Resource Management through the certificate, while non-business students can build a complimentary skill set that will be portable into their chosen field or occupation.
