Program Overview

Exceptionally qualified and prepared students who are seeking to expand their psychology knowledge beyond the undergraduate coursework required for completion of the undergraduate program may apply to complete certain graduate coursework with their bachelor’s degree. In the academic year following completion of their bachelor’s degree in Psychology, students should be able to complete their thesis as well as additional graduate coursework to earn their MS in Psychological Science.

Admissions Information

Students will be eligible to apply when they have earned or are in-process of completing 75 credit hours. Students will then be able to apply and be granted conditional admission to the master’s degree program in Psychological Science.

This program is a competitive program for highly qualified individuals. Admissions requirements include a 3.2 cumulative GPA or a 3.0 cumulative GPA with a 3.5 or higher GPA in the most recent 30 credit hours. Applicants must also have completed PSY 1010 , PSY 2110 , PSY 2120 , and at least 3 of PSY 2210 , PSY 2310 , PSY 2410 , PSY 2510 , and PSY 2710 . Applicants must obtain a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who is willing to chair the student’s thesis committee contingent on the student’s continued good standing in both the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Students who complete the program will have the potential to complete the master’s program in one year upon completion of their bachelor’s degree. The M.S. degree prepares students for doctoral training in psychology as well as a variety of research-based professional positions, e.g., behavioral medicine, consumer research, and so on.

The following courses may be completed prior to earning the bachelor’s degree:

• PSY 6111 - Advanced Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences (3 credits)
• PSY 6112 - Linear Regression Analysis (3 credits)
• PSY 6120 - Advanced Research Methods in Psychology (3 credits)
• PSY 6210 - Human Psychophysiology (3 credits)
• PSY 6220 - Physiological Psychology (3 credits)
• PSY 6310 - Cognitive Processes (3 credits)
• PSY 6410 - Developmental Psychology (3 credits)
• PSY 6510 - Experimental Social Psychology (3 credits)
• PSY 6610 - Survey of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (3 credits)
• PSY 6950 - Thesis (1 - 8 credits)
• PSY 6980 - Research Seminar (1 credit)
• PSY 7010 - History and Systems of Psychology (3 credits)
• PSY 7210 - Neuropsychology (3 credits)
• PSY 7250 - Health Psychology (3 credits)
• or any advanced seminar (PSY 8901 - PSY 8908)

Up to 13 hours from the above courses can be taken before conferral of the bachelor’s degree.

Up to nine credits of the above courses can be used to meet the requirement in the undergraduate program to complete three additional psychology classes at the 3000-level or higher. Note: PSY 6950 and PSY 6980 cannot be used to meet this undergraduate program requirement.
