Program Overview

The Global Studies - Asia major is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of Asia, or a more in-depth understanding of East Asia or Southeast Asia. Asia comprises a vital region that stands at the forefront of dynamic changes in global politics and the world economy. The Global Studies - Asia major critically examines these trends as well as the rich cultures, traditions, and societies of Asia. The curriculum involves courses from four university colleges and many disciplines; it also includes multiple opportunities for study abroad. The interdisciplinary nature of the Global Studies - Asia major is applicable to a wide variety of professions.

East Asia includes China, Japan and Korea. As American businesses expand to East Asian nations, and East Asian-based businesses expand to the United States, many employers see graduates with a solid background in East Asia as desirable prospective employees. Students have many opportunities to study abroad in East Asia, including exchange programs in China at the Ohio Shandong Center in East Asian Studies and Hong Kong Baptist University. Study abroad opportunities in Japan include exchange programs at Musashi University in Tokyo and Chubu University in Kasugai.

Southeast Asia includes Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Southeast Asia also holds great strategic importance due to burgeoning economic trade with the United States, important sea lanes connecting the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and the region’s extensive ethnic and religious diversity. Indonesia has a larger Muslim population than any other country in the world. Students also have multiple opportunities to study abroad in Southeast Asia.

Global Studies - Asia Majors are required to study at least one Asian language for three years, or study one language for two years and another language for one year. Majors are also required to study abroad or intern in Asia. Students must consult with their advisor and the Office of Global Opportunities before committing to an internship or study abroad program.

*This program is being replaced by BA5238 - International Studies  (approved by ODHE on 8/21/23) starting with the 2023-24 Academic Year.
