HSLS 1110 - Elementary American Sign Language I This is the first course in a series of six American Sign Language (ASL) classes. It covers essential ASL fundamentals, including the manual alphabet, number systems, basic grammar, non-manual markers, listing, ranking, contrastive structure, and spatial use. The course uses a conversational approach and incorporates Deaf studies, introducing students to the history and culture of the Deaf community in the United States.
Requisites: WARNING: No credit for this course if taken after the following: DSI 1120 or 2110 or 2120 and WARNING: No credit for both this course and the following (always deduct credit for first course taken): DSI 1110 Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

- Students will be able to accurately apply non-manual markers for yes/no questions, wh-questions, and topic-comment sentences in ASL.
- Students will be able to effectively initiate, manage, and conclude a brief topic-specific conversation.
- Students will be able to compare the differences and similarities among Deaf and hearing cultures.
