ML 3280 - Translation as Writing: Spanish to English


Students learn to produce fluent English translations of Spanish texts, through a writing process that emphasizes continuous revision through instructor and peer critique in writing workshops and individual conferences. Students learn to evaluate their own writing with the aim of creating translations that are not only free of errors in grammar and vocabulary, but also readable, lucid, and logical. Class time is devoted to unique problems of translating from Spanish to English.

  • Students will be able to synthesize and reflect on their experiences and insights gained during the process of translation.
  • Students will be able to explain the context and purpose of the author’s writing such that the translated text faithfully communicates the writer’s intended impression on the audience.
  • Students will be able to use contextually accurate and meaningful content to illustrate mastery of translation theories, conveying the writer’s perspective and shaping the translation as a whole.
  • Students will be able to employ formal and informal guidelines for particular kinds of texts that guide structural and stylistic elements appropriate for translation studies.
  • Students will be able to identify and use cultural, grammatical and lexical resources to engage with the original text and develop an accurate translation.
  • Students will be able to use syntax and mechanics effectively in Spanish and English to communicate ideas of the text to be translated.
