ECEE 3500 - Methods of Teaching Early Childhood and Elementary Social Studies This course focuses on developing curriculum and instructional practices that support social studies learning from preschool to fifth grade. Course emphasis is placed on identifying and practicing approaches and instructional strategies that prepare children to be aware, engaged, and involved citizens within a democratic society. Through the use of literature, discussion, inquiry and democratic processes, this course presents the prospective elementary and early childhood teacher with approaches to content and relevant instructional approaches for supporting and extending social studies learning in preschool-grade 5 classrooms.
Requisites: Advanced Standing, 2.75 GPA, ECEE 3002 or 3003 concurrent Credit Hours: 3 OHIO BRICKS: Bridge: Diversity and Practice Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

- Students will be able to describe the role of social studies in helping preschool¿grade 5 learners understand diverse histories, values, and communities within local, country, and global contexts.
- Students will be able to design integrated curriculum experiences that explore multiple cultural frameworks and encourage curiosity about differing perspectives and worldviews.
- Students will be able to plan and facilitate lessons that engage children in democratic dialogue, empathy, and respectful communication across cultural and community differences.
- Students will be able to apply principles of equity and social justice to address social studies topics in ways that affirm cultural diversity and promote inclusive classroom practices.
- Students will be able to evaluate and implement play-based and experiential activities that foster openness, collaboration, and cross-cultural understanding among elementary learners.
