NRSE 4515 - Principles of Professional Nursing Practice Introduces the factors and concepts that distinguish nursing as a profession. Explores historical, contemporary, and emerging influences on professional nursing practice. Introduces ethical concepts and theories impacting nursing practice, including personal values and beliefs and ethical, clinical reasoning. Introduces elements of empathy, compassion, and relationship-centered care. Students are introduced to university-based resources. This course also provides opportunities to practice public speaking.
Requisites: WARNING: No credit if NRSE 4510. Not ND9988 Credit Hours: 4 OHIO BRICKS: Bridge: Ethics and Reasoning, Bridge: Speaking and Listening Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

- Students will be able to identify historical and contemporary influences on professional nursing practice.
- Students will be able to explore and apply theory and research-based knowledge of nursing and other sciences in the articulation and application of clinical judgment and reasoning.
- Students will be able to describe and demonstrate active and passive verbal communication skills required for culturally competent, inclusive nursing practice.
- Students will be able to articulate the roles and responsibilities of nurses in healthcare advocacy and delivery, utilizing appropriate, culturally competent, and inclusive language and delivery.
- Students will be able to demonstrate professional communication using personalized, evidence-based teaching materials and a variety of communication modes.
- Students will be able to describe appropriate use and best practices for use of multimedia and social networking applications in professional healthcare practice.
- Students will be able to describe and demonstrate concepts of relationship- and patient-centered care, and social responsibility.
- Students will be able to apply foundational ethical principles, concepts, and ethical reasoning to identify, analyze, orally communicate, and successfully defend a position to foster attainment of health equity for all
- Students will be able to explain how personal ethical core beliefs influence clinical judgment and clinical decision-making.
- Students will be able to demonstrate an ethical comportment in professional practice that is reflective of the expectations of the RN scope and standards of practice and the Code of Ethics for nurses.
