NRSE 4555 - Principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Professional and Intercultural Nursing Practice


Integrates theory, standards, and knowledge from nursing and other disciplines to guide nursing practice. Human diversity is identified through a spectrum of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, physical ability, and/or social class with an emphasis on the analysis of equity. Emphasizes understanding of and sensitivity to culturally diverse populations and the recognition of potential health disparities. The study of cultural groups and their interrelationships relative to health and illness is included. The impacts of local and global health policies examined. Emphasis placed on identifying social determinants of health, empowering clients and communities, advocating for vulnerable populations, and reducing health disparities. This course meets the General Education requirements for Bridge: Diversity and Practice and Foundations: Intercultural Explorations.

Requisites: NRSE 4510 or (NRSE 4515 or concurrent). WARNING: No credit if NRSE 4570. Not ND9988

  • Students will be able to analyze the impact of diversity, ethics, and social determinants of health on accessibility, equity, affordability, health policy and health outcomes of individuals, communities, and populations.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate professionalism and personalized communication with nursing faculty, and staff, clients, communities, and members of the interprofessional team.
  • Students will be able to integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, social justice and human rights, into the care of diverse individuals and populations.
  • Students will be able to analyze how culture supports and challenges health beliefs, practices, and behaviors.
