VICO 3920 - Sports Photography Experiential Learning Practicum


Students gain hands-on experience in producing sports photography in newsroom and public relations environments. Students must have a professional full-frame sensor camera, at least one lens that is f2.8 or faster, and a telephoto lens of 300mm or longer.

Requisites: C or better in VICO 2390 and SASM 1010; and either (VICO 2392, VICO 3310, VICO 3420); and 6 hours of program electives
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate technical and storytelling skills in ways that connect classroom knowledge of photography, journalism, and media production with real-world sports communication experiences.
  • Students will be able to distinguish and articulate key differences between public relations and journalism, demonstrating how these disciplines intersect within the broader field of visual communication.
  • Students will be able to produce, refine, and present publishable sports images that effectively capture event narratives using appropriate visual communication strategies and formats that enhance meaning.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate and evaluate industry standards for remote camera setup and other technical practices, adapting these methodologies to new and evolving sports media environments.
  • Students will be able to plan, implement, and assess strategies for covering sporting events across diverse audiences and platforms, integrating ethical, journalistic, and aesthetic considerations to strengthen their professional versatility.
  • Students will be able to engage in reflection and self-assessment to identify strengths, challenges, and areas for growth, developing as adaptive learners who can apply feedback and experience to new and challenging professional contexts.
