Program Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater (Theater B.F.A.) degree offers an in-depth exploration of all aspects of the collaborative theater experience. The program is open to accepted Ohio University undergraduates, especially those who have multiple interests and talents in theater and cultural event production. It is excellent training for future public school educators in theater. This professional degree program is for students who demonstrate exceptional talent, technical proficiency, artistic potential, curiosity, and academic rigor. 

All theater majors are required to attain a minimum grade of “C” (2.0) in any theater course required for graduation.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Students completing the Theater B.F.A. often choose to work in professional theater, performing arts companies, or the broader entertainment industry. Many pursue graduate school in acting, design, playwriting, and arts administration. This degree also prepares students seeking professions outside theater, including education, law, advocacy, and social work.

University-wide Graduation Requirements


Ohio University requires the completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours for the conferral of a bachelor’s degree. This program can be completed within that 120-hour requirement. Theater B.F.A. Core Requirements


Complete all core courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

4000-Level Theater Seminar


THAR 4710  and THAR 4720  are repeatable courses with changing topics. Students may complete one section of THAR 4710  and one section of THAR 4720  or they may complete two sections of either course for a total of six (6) credit hours. Both sections must be completed with a grade of ‘C’ or better:

Complete six (6) additional credit hours of Dance (DANC), Music (MUS), Film (FILM), Art (ART), Art Hisotry (AH), English (ENG), and/or Media Arts and Studies (MDIA) courses.
